Sunset on Diego Garcia
The last sunlight mirrors across the water
as the waves dance on the shore.
The breeze stirs the leaves on the big palm trees
and pushes my hair to tickle at my face.
I am all alone on the white powder beach here
in this magical, peaceful place.
The clouds float across the water
at the very edge of the sky.
It seems a place where man should fall off the world
but the ships just sail on by.
The tide is moving in and the water slowly makes its way
further up the white sand shore.
I can hear the waves whisper and laugh
as they give then take once more.
Now visions dance in my head
as I look at the flashing golden water.
I can see a mermaid bow her head
giving thanks for the end of man’s day-
Then she swims in leaps and dives,
just as her Merfather taught her.
There’s a buccaneer ship anchored up on the horizon
it’s not watching the sunset for pleasure-
The Captain is waiting for night to fall
so the pirates can bury their treasure.
The sun has finally set itself
gently into the sea.
All that is left is a halo of red,
a gift of color to me.
The waves still whisper as the moon peeps out,
and oh how the water sprites dance.
They don’t see me watching them leap and fly,
the darkness gives me this chance.
Look! There is movement on the ship
and all the mermaids hide afar-
As shadows creep into the small boat
that’s roped over to the side.
The boat moves slowly to the shore
As the men man up the oars-
As they’re creeping in to bury their treasure
I feel that all this has happened long before.
I sit still, as the night enfolds me, in this quiet deserted place-
And all the visions disappear without leaving a trace.
The waves still dance along the shore,
Whispering of a long deep history-
And I am left here wishing,
I could decipher the mystery.
